RAIL TOUR TO AUSTRIAN WORLD HERITAGE SITES
Vienna, Graz, Semmering, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Bad Ischl and
Wachau
Ref: TSS
UNESCO
declared the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the old towns
of Salzburg and Graz, the region of Hallstatt, and the railway
line to the Semmering Pass as world heritage sites to protect
and preserve their unique beauty. The following tour offers
you enough time to discover and enjoy these sites.
Day
1: Arrival in Vienna
Arrival during the afternoon, evening meal and accommodation
for the night.
Day
2: Vienna - Semmering
During a guided tour of the city you gain a marvellous impression
of the Austrian federal capital. After travelling along the
Ringstrasse, you arrive for a visit to the imperial summer
residence of Schönbrunn. Leaving the capital, you travel
to Gloggnitz where the Ghega railway awaits you. This first
high mountain railway in the world, built by Carl Ritter von
Ghega, carries you across viaducts, through tunnels and past
a wonderful panorama from Gloggnitz to the Semmering Pass.
Accommodation in Semmering.
Day
3: Semmering - Graz
A 2-hour journey brings you to Graz, the "European Cultural
Capital 2003". Suggestion: Visit the famous Zeughaus
(armoury), well worth seeing with its historic collection
of knightly accoutrements and weapons numbering over 30,000
individual items. You can also take a trip into the "Styrian
Tuscany" and stop at an inn to enjoy live music, self-baked
bread, the famous "Verhackert" (spread of finely
chopped bacon in pork dripping) and - above all - the Styrian
wine. Overnight stay in Graz.
Day
4: Graz - Hallstatt Dachstein
After a journey through the impressive mountain range of the
Styrian Alps you arrive in the Salzkammergut. The Hallstatt
Dachstein region was doubly honoured - once for the breathtaking
and dramatic nature of its landscape, and once for the romantic
town of Hallstatt with its historic houses. The mining of
salt - the white gold of the Salzkammergut - has gone on here
since the Bronze Age and was the basis for the wealth of the
region. Overnight stay in Hallstatt.
Day
5: Hallstatt
This day is devoted to the beauties of nature. Especially
well worth seeing are the gigantic cave systems of the Dachstein.
In the prehistory and local history museum in Hallstatt you
can view the rich collection of finds from the "Hallstattzeit"
(Hallstatt era). Accommodation as on previous day.
Day
6: Hallstatt - Bad Ischl - Salzburg
The former imperial town of Bad Ischl, where Emperor Franz
Joseph I. spent numerous summers, is only a half-hour drive
away. While visiting the Habsburg Imperial Villa and the Lehàr
Villa, or during a stroll along the Esplanade, you can still
sense the splendor of the times when the nobility came here
on holiday. The journey continues along the Wolfgangsee and
the Fuschlsee to Salzburg where you can immerse yourself in
music in the city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Using the 24-hour
ticket you can use public transport to visit all the attractions
of the city. Overnight stay in Salzburg.
Day
7: Salzburg - Wachau
After a 3-hour drive on the penultimate day of your tour you
reach the most recent addition to the UNESCO World Cultural
Heritage. The Wachau, a mere 36-kilometre long section of
the Danube, is one of the oldest settled areas of our continent
and - most important of all - Austria's most famous wine-growing
region. During a boat trip along the Danube between Melk and
Spitz you can admire the rugged rock formations and the artistically
laid out wine terraces, abbeys, monasteries and castles. In
the evening you can enjoy a glass or two of something rather
special - which is actually the real reason to visit the Wachau.
Overnight stay in the Wachau.
Day
8: Journey home.
